A New Focus: Sustainability! What is Sustainability?

The traditional definition of sustainability calls for policies and strategies that meet society’s present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

The 1970 National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) formally established as a national goal the creation and maintenance of conditions under which humans and nature “can exist in productive harmony, and fulfill the social, economic and other requirements of present and future generations of Americans” [emphasis added].

Sustainable development reflects not the trade-off between business and the environment but the synergy between them. http://www.epa.gov/sustainability/basicinfo.htm

"Our nation's success depends on strengthening America's role as the world's engine of discovery and innovation. And that leadership tomorrow depends on how we educate our students today -- especially in science, technology, engineering and math. We know how important this is for our health. It's important for our security. It's important for our environment. And we know how important it is for our economy."
